Ajax – AEK Athens

Ajax welcomes AEK Athens in a game from Group E of the Champions League. One of the most legendary clubs in Europe hosts a team which rarely participates in the Champions League. Let’s see what we do know about them.

Ajax had to win in the playoffs in order to reach the Champions League group stage. Erik ten Hag’s team had a difficult challenge, facing a proven European powerhouse like Dynamo Kyiv. But the Dutch team did the job, winning the first leg at home with 3-1 and doing a 0-0 draw in Kyiv.

In the Eredivisie Ajax will try to return to the top and win the title again. Last season the club from Amsterdam lost the fight with PSV. Right now Ten Hag’s team is 2nd in the Eredivisie with 13 points, being on 2 points behind PSV. Ajax’s record at the moment shows four wins and one draw. In their last game they didn’t face a problem against Groningen and won the match with 3-0.

How we said, AEK Athens are a team which is not playing in the Champions League very often. This is why we are going to follow their performance in the tournament with an interest. AEK also had to go through the playoffs in order to qualify for the group stage. The Greek team did the job against the Hungarian MOL Vidi after a win in the first leg in Hungary and a draw at home.

Surely we won’t surprise anyone by saying that Ajax are the favourite here. The Dutch team is a well known force in Europe, especially in a historical aspect. They would like to start their Champions League campaign with a win, especially when playing at home. As for AEK, we think that they would be satisfied even with a draw here.
